About Us

The 2020 Vision Campaign is the primary campaigning body of Mayors for Peace. It arose out of the “Emergency campaign to ban nuclear weapons” launched by Mayors for Peace in 2003, and its focus is nuclear disarmament, although the Mayors for Peace Covenant gives the organisation a mandate to work on a broad range of issues from the elimination of poverty to the protection of the environment.

The 2020 Vision Campaign, with its ambitious goal of abolishing nuclear weapons by 2020, provides a focal point for Mayors for Peace and represents a high level of sustained activism. It is the 2020 Vision Campaign which has put Mayors for Peace ‘on the map’ and spurred the huge growth in membership since 2003.  This, no doubt, will be the lasting legacy of Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba’s period at the helm of Mayors for Peace.

Structure

The leadership of the 2020 Vision Campaign is composed of a General Meeting and a Board of Directors.

The General Meeting sets the strategic lines for the campaign body, including campaign plans and budget, at its annual meetings. Members of the General Meeting are Executive Cities of Mayors for Peace and Associate Members of the Mayors for Peace 2020 Vision Campaign Association.

The International Secretariat

In 2005, the General Conference of Mayors for Peace decided to establish a special office devoted solely to the 2020 Vision Campaign.  Ypres, Belgium, a city which, like Hiroshima and Nagasaki, has experienced the devastating effects of war, stepped forward, offering to host the Campaign Secretariat.  The office was officially opened in July 2006, by Mayors Akiba and Dehaene
