The leadership of the 2020 Vision Campaign is composed of a General Meeting and a Board of Directors.
The General Meeting sets the strategic lines for the campaign body, including campaign plans and budget, at its annual meetings. Members of the General Meeting are Executive Cities of Mayors for Peace and Associate Members of the Mayors for Peace 2020 Vision Campaign Association.
The Board of Directors deals with management issues and meets at least twice a year. Board members are elected for two years, and can be re-elected.
The General Meeting of the 2020 Vision Campaign Association has a 'sub-committee' relationship to the Executive Conference of Mayors for Peace. This is because, under Belgian law, registered associations are legally required to hold annual general meetings for all their members, making it impractical to declare all members of Mayors for Peace members of the 2020 Vision Campaign Association.
Associate members
The category of Associate City was approved by Mayors for Peace in August 2009 as a first step for a growing number of cities to join the Executive Conference and eventually be welcomed as Vice-President Cities during the next general Conference of Mayors for Peace in 2013.
This expansion of the leadership was seen to be critical, given the rapid growth of the organisation, and the urgency of its goal, the elimination of all nuclear weapons by 2020.
Like the Executive Cities, Associate Members are expected to take leadership in their country or region in terms of building capacity, recruiting new members, political lobbying, forming partnerships, fundraising, and participating in the annual strategic meetings of the 2020 Vision Campaign Association.
