Mission statement
"Our message is simple: eliminate the nuclear threat. Since this can technically be done by the year 2020, it would, in our view, be criminal to hold cities in jeopardy any longer."
Mayor Akiba
The 2020 Vision Campaign was launched by Mayors for Peace in 2003. Its ultimate goal is to bring about a total abolition of nuclear weapons by 2020. The International decade for Disarmament began in 2010, and provides a key opportunity to achieve international consensus on banning nuclear weapons.
The International Secretariat in Ypres was established in 2007, and is the headquarters of the 2020 Vision Campaign. Its purpose is to work to build solidarity and facilitate coordination among cities that support the total abolition of nuclear weapons, offering support and ideas for cities to become actively involved in the campaign.
Mayors for Peace 2020 Vision Campaign is also formally committed to pursuing lasting world peace by working to address the issues of starvation, poverty, refugee welfare, human rights abuses, environmental destruction and other problems that threaten peaceful coexistence within the human family.
