AMUNIC opens Mayors for Peace office in Nicaragua

Managua, Nicaragua, September 16th 2011 - Today an extraordinary general assembly of AMUNIC, the Nicaragua Association of Local Governments, adopted a declaration in support of the 2020 Vision Campaign of Mayors for Peace. Nicaragua is the only country in the world where 100% of all 153 Nicaraguan  Mayors have joined Mayors for Peace.

The General meeting of the Nicaraguan Mayors has decided to promote actively Mayors for Peace through the partner Associations of Local Governments in  Central America and through FLACMA, the Federation of local governments for Latin America and the Caribbean.. AMUNIC also decided to establish Mayors for Peace through a national and possible also regional office of MfP in Managua.

The meetings were organized by AMUNIC for the first visit to Nicaragua by Pol Heanna, the Mayors for Peace International Development Director and Executive Advisor for HPCF.

Mr. Sadrach Zeledon, also member of the international leadership of Mayors for Peace, expressed the full support of all Nicaraguan Mayors, President Daniel Ortega and the Nicaraguan people to work towards achieving the objectives of Mayors for Peace.

Mr. Sadrach Zeledon, the Mayor of Matagalpa, and President of AMUNIC, declared that on Monday September 19th the Mayors for Peace office will open its doors in Managua, the capital of Nicaragua. This is the first Mayors for Peace office in Latin America and the Caribbean region.

The establishment of a national office in Nicaragua demonstrates the will to make a significant contribution to develop Mayors for Peace. Ine the final declaration AMUNIC also declared to explore possibilities to establish the regional office for Latin America and the Caribbean in the Nicaraguan capital.

During a final lunch meeting the operational goals were discussed with Sadrach Zeledon, President of AMUNIC, Edward Centeno, President of INIFOM, Francisco Valenzuela, Secretary of AMUNIC, Nubia Lunes, Executive Director of AMUNIC, Meybol Damaris, 2020 Vision Campaigner, and Pol Heanna, International Development Director of Mayors for Peeace.

During the general meeting Mr. Sadrach Zeledon, the President of AMUNIC, announced that Ms. Meybol Damaris will be nominated as 2020 Vision Campaigner to support the efforts of Mayors for Peace in Nicaragua. Ms. Meybol Damaris works at the Women's department of the City Hall of Matagalpa and has played an important role to increase the visibility of Mayors for Peace in and outside Nicaragua.

Mayors for Peace wishes to recognize and thank AMUNIC for its very important & historic support to advance the 2020 Vision Campaign.
