Costa Rican Association of Local governments aims to sign-up 100% of all Mayors

Montes de Oro, Costa Rica, September 17 2011 - An excellent meeting to develop Mayors for Peace in Costa Rica was held today with Mr. Alvaro Jimenez Cruz, Mayor of Montes de Oro & President of the Association of Mayors of Costa Rica .

The meeting was convened in Montes de Oro by Dr.Edine von Herold, ex-Senator of Costa Rica and pediatrician. We were joined by Carlos Manuel Vicente Castro, Ex-Member of Parliament and ex-Minister of Costa Rica, Naara Keyla Reyes Nunez, volunteer MfP Costa Rica and Enrique Tovar, journalist and writer.

The first objective agreed upon is to get 100% of all Mayors to sign-up with Mayors for Peace.  Today Costa Rica already counts 46 members, out of a total of 81. The Mayor will also contact FEMICA, the Federación de Municipios del Istmo Centroamericano, to increase the presence and activities of Mayors for Peace in Central America.

It was also agreed to organize a special Mayors for Peace assembly of the Mayors of Costa Rica which will be organized at an early date. Another priority is to define a strategy to involve Costa Rican government towards Special Disarmament Conference and the 2015 NPT RevCon.

Mr. Alvaro Jimenez Cruz, Mayor of Miramar and President of ALG is very willing to join leadership as Associate Member and plans to join us in Granollers.

During a final meeting with Dr. Edine von Herold, Carlos Manuel Vicente Castro, Ex-Member of Parliament and ex-Minister of Costa Rica, and Francisco Cordero, President of the Quaker Peace Center in San Jose, it is proposed to organize the Mayors for Peace conference in the days following the OPANAL Seminar planned in Mexico City for February 2012. The Costa Rican conference aims to bring together both the local and national Government level of Costa Rica as well as NGOs.

Dr. Edine von Herold has accepted the invitation to become the 2020 Vision Campaigner for Costa Rica. She will be assisted by Ms. Naara Keyla Reyes Nunez, a student from the University of Costa Rica.
