Brasilia, June 16th 2011 - Mayors for Peace published the first newsletter for Brazil aiming to bring its activities and information closer to Brazilian Mayors. The publication was produced with the FNP (Frente Nacional de Prefeitos) and ABM (Associação Brasileira de Municípios), two major associations of local governments in Brazil. The first publication reports the developments achieved so far in Brazil, as well as other relevant events about the international network. The FNP gathers the almost 200 largest cities of Brazil, while ABM brings together almost 3,500 smaller Brazilian municipalities.
With a growing interaction with Brazilian Mayors, Cinthia Heanna, the 2020 Vision Campaigner in Brazil felt the need to further raise awareness about the issue of nuclear disarmament and the importance of the work of the organization. The Brazilian Newsletter is the first publication produced in Portuguese, making it more accessible to Brazilian local governments and supporters.
For the first issue of the Brazilian Newsletter, Mayor João Coser, President of FNP (National Front of Mayors ) and mayor of Vitória (ES), and Mr. Luiz Alberto Muniz, President of ABM (Brazilian Association of Municipalities), have signed a joint letter to invite all the Mayors in Brazil to become a member of the organisation. Stressing the importance of Brazil on nuclear issues and the role it could play in realizing a world free of nuclear weapons, the letter also reinforces the importance of the participation of Mayors in peace and security issues.
The newsletter will be initially sent as an electronic version to all the members of ABM and FNP, the two mayoral associations partners of Mayors for Peace. Future editions shall be distributed in printed format in the events in the country where Mayors for Peace will be represented.
ABM has also published a news story about the first Newsletter in their website, and an invitation was sent individually to all their members to join Mayors for Peace.
Our special thanks to Mr. Jose Carlos Rassier, Ms. Debora Maia and the staff of ABM; and Mr. Gilberto Perre, Ms. Delma Sandri and the team from FNP for making this all possible, as well as to Cinthia Heanna, 2020 Vision Campaigner in Brazil.
