5000 members but still counting

New member Mayor Kang signs up in Jeju prison

Hiroshima, September 1st 2011 - Mayors for Peace announced today that 108 new members officially joined the network during August raising the total membership to 5,000 member cities. However municipal mergers deduced 16 members, resulting in a net count of 4,984.

Amongst the new members we welcome Bangkok. With the capital of Thailand Mayors for Peace now has 106 of the world capitals amongst its members.

The network also welcomes Mr. Kang Dong-Kyun, the Mayor of Gangjeong, South-Korea in its network. Mayor Kang signed the Mayors for Peace membership registration-form while in prison. He has been imprisoned for leading non-violent resistance to the construction of a naval base near his town on Jeju Island.

The 108 new members last month are from Australia (11), Austria (12), Belgium (6), Brazil (5), Cameroon (14), Germany (8), Honduras (1), Iceland (1), Ireland (1), Italy (25), Japan (6), South Korea (1), Peru (2), Senegal (3), Thailand (1) UK (1) and USA (10). Due to city mergers we deduce members in Greece (-14), Japan (-1) and the Netherlands (-1).

Mayors for Peace wishes to acknowledge and thank the Association of Cities and Municipalities of Wallonia (Belgium), the National Front of Mayors (Brazil) and the US Conference of Mayors for inviting their members to join Mayors for Peace. We also wish to thank our leading Cities of Bastogne (Belgium), Fongo-Tongo (Cameroon), Hannover (Germany) and Manchester (UK) for their efforts to increase membership. Also special thanks to Councilor Helen Relph, the national coordinator of Mayors for Peace Australia and ICAN Australia. Finally special thanks for the impressive support from Michele Di Paolantoni, IPPNW President in Italy, and the 2020 Vision Campaigners in Austria, Brazil, Germany, Italy, Peru and Senegal for their vital support in the drive to reach 5000.

We anticipate being able to announce reaching the 5000 milestone before the end of September.  Please check this site on September 15th for details on the announcement.
