U.S. Conference of Mayors issues Mayors for Peace Recruitment Appeal

Washington DC, 29th of July 2011 - The U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) has for the first time sent a recruitment letter on behalf of Mayors for Peace to its full membership of nearly 1,200 mayors of cities with populations over 30,000.

The letter, mailed by Tom Cochran, USCM CEO and Executive Director, was signed by Mayor Donald Plusquellic of Akron Ohio, a Mayors for Peace Vice-President and USCM Past President, Mayor Jean Quan of Oakland California, new Chair of the USCM International Affairs Committee, and 13 additional Mayors for Peace members from across the country.

The Mayors for Peace recruitment letter implemented one commitment made in the groundbreaking resolution in support of Mayors for Peace and its objectives, unanimously adopted by the USCM at its annual meeting June 20th.

Mayors for Peace is hopeful this USCM initiative will inspire additional national and regional mayoral associations to issue similar recruitment letters.

The letter was sent as part of the international Mayors for Peace drive to reach 5,000 members. As of August 1, U.S. membership had reached 177 cities in 38 states.
