Campinas, November 11th 2010 - Mayors for Peace signed an agreement with the ABM (Associação Brasileira de Municípios) during a ceremony in Campinas (Sao Paulo), Brazil.
With the agreement ABM ''openly declares its support for the Mayors for Peace 2020 Vision Campaign to eliminate all nuclear weapons by the year 2020; and calls upon all Mayors from Brazil to formally join Mayors for Peace and as concrete manifestation of said support, ABM will encourage local governments from Brazil to make symbolic financial contributions to the global campaign in solidarity with the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.''
The agreement and annexes with ABM further establishes Mayors for Peace in Brazil. Last April 27th 2010 Mayors for Peace already received the support of the Frente Nacional de Prefeitos (FNP), the Brazilian National Front of Mayors. The FNP adopted a motion in support of Mayors for Peace. The FNP gathers the almost 200 largest cities of Brazil, while ABM brings together almost 3,500 smaller Brazilian cities. At the start of May 2010 Mayors for Peace was further established in Brazil when the Mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Mr. Eduardo Paes, agreed to join the campaign leadership of Mayors for Peace through Associate Membership.
The agreement with ABM was signed today at a regional ABM conference in Campinas, near Sao Paulo. The agreement was signed during a ceremony by Mr. Luiz Alberto Muniz, President of ABM, and Mr. José Carlos Rassier, the Secretary General and Executive Director. Our 2020 Vision Campaigner Cinthia Heanna and the International Development Director Pol Heanna DHuyvetter signed on behalf of MfP 2020 VC.
ABM has agreed to invite their 3,500 member cities to join formally Mayors for Peace and to promote the City Council resolution. This agreement is identical to the one signed with the Federacion Argentina de Municipios. The agreement refers to two annexes with the registration form and a draft city council resolution.
ABM will soon post the logo of Mayors for Peace on their website and refer to the relevant documents, such as membership registration-form, resolution and the GNI/capita system and population.
ABM will make an electronic mailing to aprox. 15,000 contacts in their ABM network in Brazil. ABM also agreed to facilitate contacts with the Brazilian Federal government, offers us free facilities in Brasilia if needed, and invite us to important conferences they organize.
ABM and Mayors for Peace intend to establish a close, long-lasting relationship and will actively explore avenues of further cooperation.
Finally we wish to thank Cinthia Heanna, our 2020 Vision Campaigner in Brazil, who has been a great help to achieve this new agreement with a national association of cities in Brazil.
