Big Cap
Big Cap
A worldwide sample of the major cities that are members of Mayors for Peace
Mayors for Peace is very proud of its huge network of cities, numbering almost 5000 cities now and representing over one billion people. But it can be difficult to look through a list of 5000 cities to spot the 'most important' cities. With our 'Big-Cap' list, we make that easier. It presents on two pages 206 cites from 147 countries that are members of Mayors for Peace. These cities come from a longer 'Big-Cap' list of 542 cities from 196 UN member states and permanent observer. This longer list includes the CAPital city of every country and, if the population of that country is greater than one million, the BIGgest city that is not the capital. Countries over ten million get two additional largest cities; over hundred million, four; a billion, six. This definition of 'important cities' is, of course, arbitrary and leaves out many cities worthy of special mention. But this unavoidable whatever the 'objective' criteria and so we make use of these lists until a clearly superior list is developed. These lists help us see were we are strong with major cities and where we are weak. This will be highly relevant to fundraising and membership efforts in the coming years as we switch emphasis from quantity to quality.
