Contribute to Mayors for Peace

The 2020 Vision Campaign depends on the support of member cities to achieve its goals, and continue its work for a world free of nuclear weapons.

Without adequate funds, we are unable to ensure that the voice of cities is heard as it ought to be at the national and international levels, or to build our campaign’s capacity to advocate the abolition of nuclear weapons around the world.

Therefore, we invite all our members to make an annual contribution to the 2020 Vision Campaign.  We would also like to extend our thanks to all the cities which have already made generous contributions to our campaign, in particular those who have pledged ongoing support in the years to come.  And we make special note of the major ongoing support from Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Read Mayor Akiba’s Urgent Fundraising Appeal, or scroll down to find out more about our contribution system, and how your city can make a donation today.

About the Invoice System

Why have I received an invoice?

The General Conference of Mayors for Peace decided to invite all the members of Mayors for Peace to make an annual financial contribution in solidarity with the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki who have carried the financial burden for over 25 years.  All contributions go entirely toward the 2020 Vision Campaign.

Our annual request for member contributions takes the form of an invoice.  The invoice suggests an appropriate amount for each city.  However, you can make a contribution to the 2020 Vision Campaign of any amount, and at any time, regardless of whether you have received an invoice.  (For many cities, it is easier to respond to an invoice than to simply make a donation.)

How do I make my contribution?

The easiest way to pay is to wire your contribution to the bank account of the 2020 Vision Campaign office of Mayors for Peace in Belgium:

Bank Account for Mayors for Peace 2020 Vision Campaign vzw

IBAN: BE48-0882-3710-0327     BIC (SWIFT code): GKCCBEBB

National non-profit organisation number: 0894109277

Bank: DEXIA (branch Vlamertinge - Dikkebus), Kerkplein 18,  8908 Vlamertinge - Ieper, Belgium

If you need any further details, or would prefer another method of payment, please contact us.

Is it compulsory to pay?

No.  There is no fee to join Mayors for Peace, and donations are completely voluntary.  Non-payment of the invoice will have no negative consequences for the member.  However, we would like to emphasise that the work of the 2020 Vision Campaign would not be possible without the financial support of our members, and so making a contribution is an important way of demonstrating your commitment to our vision of a world free of nuclear weapons.

How is the suggested sum on the invoice calculated?

We try to be fair in our suggestion of what each city should contribute to the 2020 Vision Campaign. Therefore, the amount on your invoice is calculated according to the population of your city, and the Gross National Income per Capita (GNI) of your country, as reported annually by the World Bank. This is the table we use to make this calculation, and the most recent World Bank GNI Index.

We operate in Euros, because the International Secretariat of the campaign is based in Ypres, Belgium.   Find out how much your contribution is in your own currency here.

If you have a query about the amount suggested on your invoice, or believe we have made an error in our calculations, please contact us.

Do I have to pay the amount specified on the invoice?

No.  The amount on the invoice is a suggestion of what we feel to be an appropriate and fair contribution from your city.  However, please feel free to adjust the amount up or down as you see fit.  We are grateful for all contributions from our members, whatever the size.

How will the money my city contributed be spent?

Your contribution will only be used for the functioning of the International Secretariat of the 2020 Vision Campaign and the approved activities of the Campaign.   With your support, we will continue to work hard to give your city a voice against the nuclear threat to cities and the world and for the establishment of a nuclear-weapon-free world by the year 2020.

Our annual expenditure includes, for example, the running costs of the International Campaign office, the production of campaign materials, and the organization of special conferences and events.  Funds are NOT used to pay for the travel of mayors.  Each city covers the costs of its participation in our events.

If you would like more detailed information about the budget and accounts of the 2020 Vision Campaign, please contact us.

How can my city pledge to make a regular contribution each year?

Continued and consistent support from cities plays a crucial role in allowing our campaign to plan ahead and achieve our goals. Therefore, we encourage local authorities to commit to the contribution of an annual sum until 2020, as some cities have already done.

Our city council resolution is a template which you can use to bring a motion to your council to pledge ongoing support for the 2020 Vision Campaign.

Can my city ask to stop receiving invoices?

Yes.  If you no longer wish to be invoiced by the Mayors for Peace 2020 Vision Campaign, please send us a letter to that effect signed by your Mayor.  Upon receipt of such a letter, all requests to your city for funds will be suspended as long as the Mayor is in office.
