Statements from the first contributors to the 2020 Vision Campaign

Mayor Wim Dries, City of Genk (Belgium)

"As a city council in Belgium, nuclear threats seem to be a thing of a distant past (or future), or from a distant country. But we must remain vigilant and in that regard we can't attain much in isolation. Therefore we support the Network of Mayors for Peace. Our contribution is but a small link in what hopefully becomes a strong chain from grassroot to summit working towards a safe future with no place for nuclear warfare."

Mayor Daniël Termont, City of Gent (Belgium)

"The times have changed. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, there is no more need for 'mutually assured destruction' - fortunately enough. Time to get rid of all nuclear weapons! Still, not everybody has got the message. More pressure from the public opinion worldwide is needed. Mayors are closest to the people: an association such as 'Mayors for Peace' is our most valuable weapon in the battle for peace! Because together, our voices will sound even louder."
