1. Mission Statement

Mayors for Peace works to build solidarity and to facilitate coordination among cities that support the Program to Promote the Solidarity of Cities toward the Total Abolition of Nuclear Weapons. Its primary goal is to work internationally to raise awareness of the need for the abolition of nuclear weapons. Mayors for Peace is also formally committed to pursuing lasting world peace by working to address the issues of starvation, poverty, refugee welfare, human rights abuses, environmental destruction and other problems that threaten peaceful coexistence today.

2. What is Mayors for Peace?

In August 1945, atomic bombs instantaneously reduced the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to rubble, taking hundreds of thousands of precious lives. Today, more than fifty years after the war, thousands of citizens still suffer from radiation's devastating after-effects and unfathomable emotional pain. To prevent a repetition of the A-bomb tragedy, the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki have continually sought to inform the world of the inhumanity and cruelty of nuclear weapons and have consistently demanded their total abolition.

On June 24, 1982, at the 2nd UN Special Session on Disarmament held at UN Headquarters in New York, the then-Mayor Takeshi Araki of Hiroshima proposed a new 'Program to Promote the Solidarity of Cities toward the Total Abolition of Nuclear Weapons'. This proposal offered cities a way to transcend national borders and work together to push for nuclear abolition. Subsequently, the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki called on mayors around the world to support this cause.

Mayors for Peace is composed of cities throughout the world that have formally expressed support for the Program that Mayor Araki announced in 1982. In March 1990, the Mayors Conference was officially registered as a UN NGO affiliated with the Department of Public Information. In May 1991, it became a Category II NGO (currently called an NGO in "Special Consultative Status") registered with the Economic and Social Council. As of December 1st, 2008, membership stood at 2, 536 cities in 133 countries and regions all over the world.

     1) Which are the Executive Cities of Mayors for Peace?

The Executive Cities meet every 2 years. The Executive Conference is authorized to make emergency decisions for the Organization in place of the General Conference with the exception of electing the President and the Vice-President. It was the Executive Cities which decided to establish the 2020 Vision Campaign association so that it remains fully under control of Mayors for Peace.

     2) What are the Associate Cities of Mayors for Peace?

Associate Membership is a new category approved by Mayors for Peace in August 2009 as a first step for a growing number of cities to join the Executive Conference and eventually be welcomed as Vice-President Cities during the next general Conference of Mayors for Peace in 2013.

The expansion of the leadership was felt as critical for the organisation which is growing very rapidly and has set as objective to eliminate all nuclear weapons by 2020..

As the Executive Cities the Associate Members are also expected to take leadership in their country or region concerning capacity building, including membership recruitment, political lobby-work, involving national association of local authorities, fundraising and joining the annual strategic meetings of the 2020 Vision Campaign Association.

6. How do I become a member?

Only mayors can be members of Mayors for Peace, which they can do by registering their city with the organization with a Registration Form (found in the 'Members' section).  Once affiliated, all succeeding mayors of that city are automatically members of Mayors for Peace, unless they choose otherwise.  To gain membership, send a letter from the mayor or the head of the City Council to the Conference Secretariat stating that your city supports the Program to Promote the Solidarity of Cities toward the Total Abolition of Nuclear Weapons and would like to join the Mayors for Peace. Shortly thereafter, the Secretariat will send by return mail a certificate confirming membership.

Membership of Mayors for Peace involves no annual dues or any other financial obligation, though financial contribution is much appreciated and well-needed.
