Belgian Mayors support peace walkers

August 6, 2005
August 6th- Brussels' Deputy mayor Bruno De Lille (2nd left), Mr. Sato, a survivor of the Hiroshima bomb, and peace walker Marriette Moors meet with a NATO representative to discuss the illegality of NATO nuclear weapons policy. Here they are in discussion in front of NATO headquesters.

The Hiroshima Peace Walk 2005 covered 250 km from Ypres in the west of Flanders to Kleine Brogel, a NATO nuclear base in Limburg. This walk took place between 26th July and 9th August 2005. The walkers were welcomed at City Halls all along the way to the NATO base of Kleine Brogel, where the US stores 20 B61 bombs, a potential of almost 200 Hiroshima's.

During the Walk there was the commemmorating of the 60th anniversary of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima on the 6th August, and of Nagasaki on the 9th August 1945. Many Belgian Mayors for Peace attended the ceremonies or participated in the walk to support the international appeal for the abolition of all nuclear weapons by 2020.
