Akiba wins election in Hiroshima

Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba has won the municipal elections in Hiroshima today with 47% of the votes, adding a third four-year term as Mayor of Hiroshima and President of Mayors for Peace.

As the results were announced Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba stated:
"As I was campaigning, I told the people of Hiroshima that they should be proud of their truly remarkable city, proud of their amazing accomplishments, and proud of their mission. Their mission is to spread the culture of peace, and in the next four years we are going to do more than ever to develop a culture of peace here in this city. Then, we will change Japan, and Japan will change the world. We are just getting started."

The Mayor of Hiroshima is planning to travel to Guernica for the 70th anniversary of the bombing of the city on April 26th 1937 during the Spanish civil war.

Mayor Akiba will also join a Mayors for Peace delegation during the upcoming nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Preparatory Committee meeting in Vienna, April 30th to 3 May.
