32 new members bring membership to 2,226

May 12, 2008
As of May 12th 2008,  32 new member cities have joined Mayors for Peace and Mayors for Peace now count 2,226 member cities in 129.

We welcome the Mayor of Hargeisa as the first member from Somaliland, Africa. We also count new members in Australia (1), Belgium (4), Czech Republic (1), Denmark (2), Italy (1), Japan (14), Mali (1), South Africa (1), Spain (2), Sweden (2), Switzerland (1) and Venezuela (1).
Below is the list of the 32 new members:

Ballarat (Australia), Liedekerke, Saint-Léger, Schaarbeek, Virton (Belgium), Mesto Touskov (Czech Republic), Ærø & Faxe (Denmark), Luzzara (Italy), Fukuyama, Higashihiroshima,  Kofu, Mito, Miyoshi, Sanuki, Shobara, Tottori, Tsushima, Ueda, Uto, Yonago, Ome, Onomichi (Japan), Ouélessébougou (Mali), Hargeisa (Somaliland), Cape Town (South Africa), Horta de Sant Joan,  Terrassa (Spain), Lindersberg, Mörbylånga (Sweden), Lancy (Switzerland) and Libertador (Venezuela).

The 2020 Vision Campaign continuous to attract a strong support. We would like to thank all the Mayors, their staff and civil society for their ongoing backing.

Further support is needed:

As the network is growing Hiroshima and Nagasaki invite the entire membership of more than 2,020 cities to match their annual contribution of 250,000 euro in 2008. It is not normal that these 2 Japanese cities continue to carry the financial burden of the entire network. We are sure everybody agrees that it should be possible for over 2,000 cities to match financial contributions of the 2 Japanese cities which were victim to US atomic bombings in 1945. However support from outside Japan is slow with so far 78 cities making financial contributions.

We urge both Mayors, their staff and civil society to make it a top priority to table the resolution in support of the 2020 Vision Campaign to their council. You can find the draft resolution on http://www.2020visioncampaign.org/pages/325/

Note that the resolution is available in Dutch, English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.

Translations!

Since a couple of weeks the Spanish version of the website is on-line. Many thanks to Jaira Valenzuela Toledo. Check www.2020visioncampaign.org/es

We are now in the process of translating the 2020 Vision Campaign website in French. Also other important documents should get translated systematically. This should make it possible to increase our presence and co-operation in regions where these languages play an important role such as large parts of Europe, Africa and South-America.

We are looking for assistance. Please contact us if you know of a volunteer(s) who wants to help with the translations. Contact Jaira Valenzuela <jaira@2020visioncampaign.org>.
