September 1, 2008
As the G8 Speakers started their first round of meetings in Hiroshima this morning, Mayors for Peace announced that in the past month (August 1st - September 1st) another 42 Cities have joined the network. This brings total membership to 2,410 members in 131 countries and regions. New members are from Australia (1), Brazil (1), Netherlands (1), Spain (7), Iran (2), Japan (5) and Nicaragua (25).
This latest membership update was announced in Hiroshima as the G8 Speakers from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, UK and the US started a two-day meeting in Hiroshima. Mayors for Peace President Dr. Akiba Tadatoshi called on the Speakers to use their influence to move towards complete nuclear disarmament.

New membership growth is particularly strong in Latin-America, with the addition of Sao Paulo in Brazil and a spectacular numbers in Nicaragua.   This remarkable growth in Nicaragua follows an initiative by Mr. Saul Arana Castellon, the Nicaraguan Ambassador in Japan, who talked to Dr. Tadatoshi Akiba on August 6th in Hiroshima.

Dr. Shahriar Khateri from the Iranian Society for Chemical Weapons Victims Support and the Tehran Peace Museum Project continues to be successful in recruiting new members as he visited cities who fell victim to chemical weapons attacks.

Also in Japan and Spain membership continues to grow steadily thanks to ongoing initiatives by the Mayors for Peace office in Hiroshima and by the Catalan City of Granollers and volunteers from Greenpeace Spain.
